Moms Re-Entering the Job Market Face Unique Challenges 360JobInterview.com Helps Stay-at-Home Moms Transition From Romper Room to the Board Room
Syracuse, NY, September 8, 2009 – It has always been tough for stay-at-home mothers to re-enter the job market, but it’s especially difficult during today’s ongoing recession.
“While job hunting is challenging for everyone this year, stay-at-home moms trying to re-enter the workforce are facing unique challenges. They have to prove that they haven’t ‘lost their edge’ during their years away from the career world, and that they can bring valuable skill sets to the job,” said Jeff Garber, co-founder of 360JobInterview.com.
“In addition, they have to demonstrate that they’ve kept up-to-date on news, technologies and contacts in their industry,” Garber continued. “360JobInterview.com can help these women in a variety of ways, including improving their resumes and interviewing skills, and helping them re-brand themselves, differentiate themselves from the competition and gain confidence to go out and get a job.” 360JobInterview.com is a revolutionary new LIVE web-based service that helps job seekers improve their interviewing skills and resumes, gain confidence and secure new jobs. The company features over 300 skilled HR coaches – across 55+ industries – who know from firsthand experience what recruiters are looking for during the interview process. The Syracuse-based company provides services nationally.
360JobInterview.com’s expert career coaches offer the following tips to help women transition from stay-at-home-mom to career woman:
- Draw upon past career experience. Be prepared to explain your experience and skills, and how they’re transferable to this new position. Talk about results you’ve generated, promotions you’ve earned and awards you’ve won.
- Demonstrate your knowledge of current industry trends, tools and contacts. Highlight the ways you keep up-to-date, including reading industry trade publications on a regular basis, attending networking events in your field, etc. Also showcase your knowledge of the most innovative technologies, including social media tools and anything else that’s relevant to your particular industry.
- Highlight your ability to multi-task. Talk about how you excel at juggling multiple projects, tracking deadlines, overseeing staff, etc. Don’t use your ability to simultaneously diaper your baby, solve a sibling squabble and make dinner as your example – keep it career-focused, please.
- Utilize your self-confidence and poise. Mothers have maturity and experience that younger candidates do not, and can use this to their advantage in interviews. They will also bring their “grace under pressure” to their jobs.
- Explain what sets you apart. What special skills do you have that would be relevant to this job? If the position requires frequent travel to Paris, talk about your fluency in French. If you’re vying for a web designer position, talk about your expertise in the most innovative new technologies, as well as the numerous fabulous sites that you’ve developed in the past. Be specific – if you’ve saved past employers money, boosted their profits or set sales records, now’s the time to highlight these accomplishments.
- Talk about relevant experience that you’ve gained during your time at home. Perhaps you’ve used your past career experience as a fundraiser to spearhead the school fundraiser, raising a record-setting amount of money. Or, you used your accounting knowledge to volunteer for a community non-profit, streamlining their financial systems, making them more efficient and cost-effective. Avoid cutesy titles like “CEO of the Household” or “Chief Mommy Officer.”
- Avoid talking about your children in detail. It’s OK to say that you’ve taken time off to spend with your family, but now you’re ready to focus on your career. Explain that you have childcare – and backup care – in place. You are spotlighting your professional attributes only – now is not the time to discuss Little Johnny’s game-winning play in last night’s Little League game.
“It’s a challenging time to try to re-enter the workforce, but, unfortunately, many women need to get a job now, especially if their husbands have been laid off due to the recession,” Garber explained. “Our skilled team of HR coaches provides valuable insights to help these women prepare for – and excel at – upcoming job interviews.”
“Our career coaches can help stay-at-home mothers get back to work, guiding them through every step of the job-hunting process,” Garber continued. “We offer an affordable, accessible way for these women to develop their resumes, perfect their interviewing skills and prepare to answer potentially tough interview questions.”
“We help these women re-brand themselves from ‘mom’ to ‘career woman,’” explained Dan Fedrizzi, co-founder of 360JobInterview.com. “They may have been out of the workforce for years and may not remember how to navigate the interviewing process or how to handle the challenging questions that regularly come up in an interview. We’re here to assist them.”
